Nipple Reduction (Areola Reduction)

Large nipples, or more precisely, large areolas (the pink part around the nipple), are a source of concern for many women. A nipple reduction reduces the areola so that your breasts be normally proportioned. This allows the balance between your nipples and breast to be restored.

Nipple reduction is often combined with a breast reduction as large breasts tend to stretch out the areola area. A nipple reduction can often be done at the same time as your reduction or may require a separate operation. Dr. Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will assist you in making this decision.

What can a nipple reduction treat?

A breast reduction can address such issues as:

  • Areola that is out of proportion with the rest of the breast
  • Areola that are different sizes and shapes

Is a nipple reduction right for me?

A nipple reduction is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Breast reduction may be a good option for you if:

  • Your are satisfied with the overall size and shape of your breasts or are combining breast procedures
  • Your breasts are fully developed
  • Your are at your personally ideal weight
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  • You are physically healthy
  • You do not smoke

What happens during a breast augmentation?
  • Step 1 - Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, and your anesthesiologist will recommend the best choice for you.

  • Step 2 - The Incision

A common method of reducing the areola involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola then another is made which runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision is horizontal beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease.

  • Step 3 - Remove Excess Skin and Redrape

Excess areola is removed and the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. Skin that was formerly located above the areola is brought down and together beneath it to reshape the breast and areola.

  • Step 5 - Close the Incision

Once the areolas are the desired size and shape, the incision is stiched closed.

  • Step 6 - See the Results

The results of an areola reduction will be immediately visible when the bandages are removed. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. In general, it typically takes six months for the breasts to settle into their final position once swelling has subsided. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover and realize the fulfillment of your goals for your breasts.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

After a post-surgical recovery period of 24 to 48 hours and an additional reduced-activity period of a few days, you will likely experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. Exercise and normal activity can resume at the direction of your Chicago plastic surgeon, Dr. Weinzweig. Over time, post-surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.

You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago cosmetic surgeon.

What are the risks of nipple reduction surgery?

All plastic surgery carries risks along with the many rewards as no surgery is risk free. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will explain the risks in your consultation so you can make an informed decision based on your unique situation.
