Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Localized fat or excess glandular tissue in one or both breasts can give the appearance of breasts on the male body. A male breast reduction removes excess fat and tissue restoring the chest to a normal size and projection.

What can a male breast reduction treat?

A male breast reduction can address such issues as:

  • Breast tissue and fat deposits on the male chest that are disproportionately large and noticeable
  • Development of fat deposits or breast issue on one side of chest
  • Dissatisfaction or self-consciousness about the appearance of your chest

Is male breast reduction surgery right for me?

A male breast reduction is a highly individualized surgery and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. A male breast reduction may be a good option for you if:

  • You are over 18 years old and are male
  • You are at or near your ideal weight
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  • You are physically healthy
  • You do not smoke

What happens during male breast reduction surgery?
  • Step 1 - Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, and your anesthesiologist, will recommend the best choice for you.

  • Step 2 - Liposuction Fat Deposits & Remove Excess Tissue

An incision is made under the arm or on the edge of the areola. Excess glandular tissue and skin are removed and, if necessary, liposuction of the area will be performed to remove excess fat.

  • Step 3 - Close the Incision

The incisions are then closed and the chest will be bandaged.

  • Step 4 - See the Results

The results of a male breast reduction are immediately visible when bandages are removed. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. In general, it typically takes six months for the chest to settle to its final size. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover and realize the fulfillment of your goals.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

After a post-surgical recovery period of 24 to 48 hours and an additional reduced-activity period of a few days, you will likely experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. Exercise and normal activity can resume at the direction of Dr. Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon. Over time, post-surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.

You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with your Chicago cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig.

What are the risks of male breast reduction surgery?

All plastic surgery carries risks along with the many rewards as no surgery is risk free. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will explain the risks in your consultation so you can make an informed decision based on your unique situation.
