Lip Reduction

Lip reduction surgery restores the harmonous balance between the face and the mouth. Because your mouth is one of the most expressive parts of your face, having lips that are the appropriate size and that display the appropriate amount of teeth is key to being perceived as young, happy, and attractive. Lips that are too large for your face will make your other features recede into the background. Lip reduction allows for harmony to be restored to your face allowing your face to be balanced and well proportioned.

What can a lip reduction treat?

Lip reduction will restore a more balanced and softer look to your face. Lip reduction is best at solving such problems as:

  • Lips that are too broad or too full or too "fat"
  • Tramatic damage or congential conditions resulting in extra scar tissue
  • Too little tooth exposure when smiling
  • Difficulty eating or drinking due to lip incompetence

Is lip reduction right for me?

Lip reduction is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Lip reduction may be a good option for you if:

    • You are physically healthy
    • You do not smoke
    • You have a positive outlook and specific, but realistic, goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance.

What happens during lip reduction surgery?
  • Step 1 - Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, and your anesthesiologist, will recommend the best choice for you.

  • Step 2 - The Incision & Removal of Extra Tissue

A W-shaped or Z-shaped excision, which is used to prevent the contracture of a straight-line scar, is created and the extra skin is removed. There are some indications where a straight excision is appropriate and your Chicago cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, will discuss the incision design with you.

  • Step 3 - Close the Incision

Stitches are used close the incision.

  • Step 4 - See the Results

The visible improvements of surgical lip reduction will be visible a few weeks after surgery once the intial swelling has resolved.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

Your lips will be sore and swollen after the procedure and there may some bruising apparent. The bruising and swelling will subside within a week.

You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with your cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig.

What are the risks of lip reduction surgery?

All plastic surgery carries risks along with the many rewards as no surgery is risk free. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will explain the risks in your consultation so you can make an informed decision based on your unique situation.
