Jaw Surgery

Jaw surgery is a surgical procedure where the jaw is repositioned or reconstructed in a manner that restores facial harmony. Jaw surgery can be used to soften or create a more angular, more defined jawline depending on the cosmetic need.

What can jaw surgery treat?

Jaw surgery can restore facial harmony by addressing such problems as:

  • Soft, under-defined jawline
  • Overly masculine or square jawline

Is jaw surgery right for me?

Jaw surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Jaw surgery may be a good option for you if:

  • Your facial growth is complete
  • You have a positive outlook and specific, but realistic, goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance.
  • You are physically healthy
  • You do not smoke

What happens during jaw surgery?
  • Step 1 - Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, and your anesthesiologist, will recommend the best choice for you.

  • Step 2 - The Incision

The exact location of the incision will depend on the type of surgery performed. All incisions are inside the mouth and undetectable.

  • Step 3 - Reconstruct, Reposition, Redrape and Close Incision

    Jawline Reduction & Softening

The surgeon will use a burr to reshape the jawline to provide a more proportionate, appropriate shape. The skin will be redraped and the incision will be closed.

    Jawline Enhancement

The surgeon will use a burr to reshape the jawline to provide a more proportionate, appropriate shape. The skin will be redraped and the incision will be closed.

  • Step 4 - See the Results

The visible improvements of the jaw appear as swelling and bruising subside. While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, you will see close to the final result with in 3 months of the surgery. As with all plastic surgery of the face, it will take approximately a year for the soft tissue to completely settle. Your final result should not only restore a more harmonious look to your face, but also help you feel more confident about yourself.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

When your procedure is completed, a bandage could gently be placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising. We offer post-surgical make-up assistance to help you conceal bruising during your recovery period which should only last at most for a week. For the first few days, you will only eat soft foods and will use ice packs to reduct the swelling and discomfort.

You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with your Chicago cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Weinzweig.

What are the risks of jaw surgery?

All plastic surgery carries risks along with the many rewards as no surgery is risk free. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will explain the risks in your consultation so you can make an informed decision based on your unique situation.
