Chin Surgery

Chin surgery is a set of surgical procedures where the chin is repositioned or reconstructed in a manner that restores facial harmony. Chin surgery can be used to soften or create a more angular, more defined chin depending on the cosmetic need.

What can chin surgery treat?

Chin surgery can restore facial harmony by solving such problems as:

  • Disportionately small chin
  • Overly prominent chin

Is a chin surgery right for me?

Chin surgery is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Chin surgery may be a good option for you if:

  • Your facial growth is complete
  • You have a positive outlook and specific, but realistic, goals in mind for the improvement of your appearance.
  • You are physically healthy
  • You do not smoke

What happens during chin surgery?
  • Step 1 - Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, and your anesthesiologist, will recommend the best choice for you.

  • Step 2 - The Incision

The exact location of the incision will depend on the type of surgery performed. All incisions are inside the mouth and undetectable.

  • Step 3 - Reconstruct, Reposition, Redrape and Close Incision

  • Chin Reduction (Mentoplasty)

The surgeon will use a burr to reshape the chin to provide a more proportionate, appropriate shape. The skin will be redraped and the incision will be closed.

  • Chin Augmentation (Genioplasty)

A chin augmentation will require either the use of a chin implant to augment a receding chin, or by the surgical advancement of the bone itself.

If you choose a chin implant, the implant is placed in an appropriately sized pocket and sizers are used to achieve the best appearance. The implant is carefully placed into the pocket and the incision is closed.

If you choose to advance bone in the chin, the edge of the chin bone will be separated and then chin bone tip moved forward and reposition it special bone plates. The surgeon then stitches the incision closed.

  • Step 4 - See the Results

The visible improvements of the chin appear as swelling and bruising subside. While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, you will see close to the final result within 3 months of the surgery. As with all plastic surgery of the face, it will take approximately a year for the soft tissue to completely settle. Your final result should not only restore a more harmonious look to your face, but may also help you feel more confident about yourself.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

When your procedure is completed, a bandage may be gently placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising. We offer post-surgical make-up assistance to help you conceal bruising during your recovery period which should only last approximately a week. For the first few days, you will only eat soft foods and will use ice packs to reduce the swelling and discomfort.

You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with your Chicago cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig.

What are the risks of chin surgery?

All plastic surgery carries risks along with the many rewards as no surgery is risk free. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will explain the risks in your consultation so you can make an informed decision based on your unique situation.
