Breast Reduction

If you would like relief from physical symptoms caused by the excessive weight of large breasts and are interested in improvement in the size and shape of your breasts, then a breast reduction might be the correct procedure for you. Following breast reduction, your breasts will be more proportionate to the rest of your body, your clothes will fit you better, and you will no longer have the associated back or neck pain or those unattractive indentations in your shoulders.

What can breast reduction surgery treat?

A breast reduction can address such issues as:

  • Breasts that are disproportionately large as compared to your body frame
  • Heavy breasts with nipples and areolas that point downward
  • One breast that is much larger than the other
  • Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • Skin irritation beneath your breasts
  • Indentations in your shoulders from tight bra straps
  • Restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts
  • Dissatisfaction or self-consciousness about the size of your breasts

Is breast reduct surgery right for me?

Breast reduction suregery is a highly individualized surgery and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. Breast reduction may be a good option for you if:

  • You are at or near your ideal weight
  • Your are at your personally ideal weight
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  • You are physically healthy
  • You do not smoke

What happens during breast reduction surgery?
  • Step 1 - Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, and your anesthesiologist, will recommend the best choice for you.

  • Step 2 - The Incision

A common method of reducing the breasts involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola then another is made which runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision is horizontal beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease.

  • Step 3 - Remove Excess Skin and Redrape

Excess breast skin is removed and the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola, which is most cases breast has been stretched, will be reduced in size. Skin that was formerly located above the areola is brought down and together beneath it to reshape the breast. Liposuction may then be used to improve the contour under the arm.

  • Step 5 - Close the Incision

Once the breast are the desired size and shape, the incisions are stitched closed.

  • Step 6 - See the Results

The results of breast reduction surgery are immediately visible when the bandages are removed. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. In general, it typically takes six months for the breasts to settle into their final position once swelling has subsided. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover and realize the fulfillment of your goals for your breasts.

What should I exercise during the recovery period?

After a post-surgical recovery period of 24 to 48 hours and an additional reduced-activity period of a few days, you will likely experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. Exercise and normal activity can resume at the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon. Over time, post-surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.

You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with your cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig.

What are the risks of breast reduction surgery?

All plastic surgery carries risks along with the many rewards as no surgery is risk free. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will explain the risks in your consultation so you can make an informed decision based on your unique situation.
