Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Loss of skin elasticity, gravity and other factors such as weight loss, pregnancy and breast-feeding ultimately affect the shape and firmness of your breasts. If you are generally satisfied with the size of your breasts, a breast lift to raise and firm, resulting in a more youthful breast contour, may be appropriate.
Some patients may be unhappy that they have lost a significant amount of breast volume. In such cases, implants inserted in conjunction with a breast lift can increase breast size at the same time as the shape and position of the breasts are enhanced.
A breast lift can address such issues as:
- Breasts that hang downward or are positioned lower than desired, but are of satisfactory size
- Breasts that lack substance or firmness
- Nipples and areolas that point downward, especially if they are positioned below the breast crease
- Breasts that vary in size or shape
A breast lift is a highly individualized procedure and you should do it for yourself, not to fulfill someone else's desires or to try to fit any sort of ideal image. A breast lift may be a good option for you if:
- Your breasts are fully developed
- You have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
- You are physically healthy
- You do not smoke
Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, and your anesthesiologist, will recommend the best choice for you.
A common method of lifting the breasts involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision is horizontal beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease. Other commonly used techinques require a variation of these incisions.
Excess breast skin is removed and the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola, which in a sagging breast may have been stretched, can be reduced in size. Skin that was formerly located above the areola is brought down and together beneath it to reshape the breast. The nipples and areolas will remain attached to underlying mounds of tissue, allowing for the preservation of sensation and the ability to breastfeed.
Once the breasts are in the desired location, the incisions are stiched closed.
The results of a breast lift are immediately visible and bandages are removed. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. In general, it typically takes six months for the breasts to settle into their final position once swelling has subsided. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover and realize the fulfillment of your goals for your breasts.
After a post-surgical recovery period of 24 to 48 hours and an additional reduced-activity period of a few days, you will likely experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. Exercise and normal activity can resume at the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon. Over time, post-surgical swelling will decrease and incision lines will fade.
You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for the surgical site, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig.
All plastic surgery carries risks along with the many rewards as no surgery is risk free. Dr. Jeffrey Weinzweig, your Chicago plastic surgeon, will explain the risks in your consultation so you can make an informed decision based on your unique situation.
